I can’t let the day pass without writing a little about the significance of this day. It’s November 15th…Maki’s birthday. But not just any birthday…today we have a teenager in the house. It looked a little like this…
Just kidding. Maki is way more mature than that! He’s our Man of the House, after all.
What he wanted to do tonight: have a slumber party with a couple of his friends, eat a lot of of junk food, play their card games, and watch movies that he never gets to watch at home with a four year old running around. So she and I have camped out upstairs and left them to their boys-only party.
The other thing Maki really wanted to do today was have Chris Adams take him and his buddies climbing at their indoor rock climbing gym. I knew he loved his climbing time with Chris, but I didn’t realize it would be his top birthday choice of activity. Some of his other climbing friends celebrated with him. Here are Sarah, Maki, Devlin, Damon, and Scott.
I think its so great how Maki has been embracing friendships of different ages. People have reached out to him as well, and I know his dad would be pleased to know this. He is such a well-adjusted kid.
We love our teenager.
Happy Birthday, Maki!
(Big thanks also to his family in Norway, England, and his mother in New Zealand for all the presents that made him feel extra special today. He woke up at 7 to get at the goods. It was like Christmas!)

Happy Birthday, Maki ! How grand to be so old and having so much fun! Congrats! I didn’t realize you shared the birthday with my mom- she would’ve been 96 today – i’m sure she’s having lots of chocolate cake AND ice cream! Blessings on you, young man. aunt sue
I remembered that too, Sue! And Cambria’s son Jameson as well!
Happy Birthday Maki! I loved the video-It’s Noah! Love you all!
Ha! It’s only a phase..:that lasts 5 years or so! Hehehe. Isn’t it a hilarious sketch?
WOW Maki! looks like you had a fun 13th Birthday, full of things you wanted to do, with your friends, hope you get some sleep tonight, if not, hope Allison and Justine do!! Nanna phoned me to say she had spoken to you ..hope you find something special with your Birthday money ..us oldies know you need to buy your gifts yourself now (we get it so wrong these days!!we do the same for Aaron and Lewis)
Allison it was great to see Harry Enfield with his “Kevin birthday” sketch again, loved watching Kevin and Perry years ago on the tv,even funnier now , when you have a teenager..we often say “just like Kevin”, when we are smiling at something Aaron has said or done… just doesn`t seem possible Maki is 13, how time flies, seems only yesterday he was born, he was such a good baby, young boy and he has turned into a very sensible “teenager”,i hope he knows we are all very proud him xx love and hugs to you all xx
Happy Birthday to Maki! Makes me happy to see he has cake with lights! You’re right Vanessa, he was a easy baby and a very sensible “old” child, but then he was always treated almost like a grown up. He is still a child for some years more, good that he gets to Climb and have fun! Thank you Allison for making his birthday so great! Lots of love
i remember him being so good, always used to sit and watch Aaron running round like a human tornado.. then later he joined in with the games..and loved dressing up in Aarons “dressing up” clothes, and then ofcause Lewis came along , who was much more like Maki and they both used to sit and watched Aaron!! It was always amusing to watch Maki run after Aaron, and Lewis run after Maki, Maki was always so kind to Lewis as he was too small to join in!! i guess you are wondering where those 13 years have gone Synnove??( i have a few photos back from Devon and Bournemouth,) and Helene, yes it was enjoyable being “aunties” and playing with Maki as a small child , lets hope he enjoys playing a bit longer…. Aaron will be 18 next year, they grow up much too fast xx
Wonderful words, Vanessa. Wow, imagine Aaron is 18 soon! Lots of love to you xx
Looks like Maki had a great birthday! Thank you, Allison, for sharing it with us and making the day so special for him! It is so strange to think he is a teenager, time flies indeed. I hope Maki still does a lot of playing for a few more years! Well, I guess it’s important to play at all ages. Maki has always been such a sensible child and I always very much enjoyed playing together with him back in the days when we lived closer. Miss you, Maki, and keep playing! 🙂 Lots and lots of love to all of you Maki, Allison, Vernon and little Justine xxx
