The waiting game…that’s not a game

Walking into Vernon’s hospital room is like going into a classroom. The attendant nurse and any doctors who come by are all quick to answer questions and explain what is going on in Vernon’s body. They are compassionate, skilled and articulate…the caretakers and guardians of our dear sleeping friend. Knowing he is getting the best care possible gives us hope. And knowing that people are praying for God to do what doctors and medicine can’t do, gives us confidence and peace.

We have been waiting for Vernon’s next surgery, which will repair the damaged bones of the pelvis. What I didn’t realize is that until that happens, Vernon cannot be moved…at all. He can’t be turned over or his body exercised, all things that will speed his recovery. But he won’t have the surgery until he is stable enough to tolerate it. Right now he is still too fragile.

The good news is that the first dialysis treatment last night brought marked improvement to his lungs. He will have another dialysis treatment tonight to continue removing the excess fluid in his body and lungs. Unfortunately, the pelvic surgery has been postponed until next week. That is a disappointment as we are eager to see Vernon move to the next stage of recovery. Pray with us that he will stabilize, that his lungs and kidneys will improve and function properly, and that the brain would continue to heal. We are so grateful for those who are supporting Vernon with thoughtful notes, concerted prayer and many acts of kindness toward the family.

Looking Good!

Looking Good!

Vernon was in surgery longer than we expected this morning but everything went well. Allison says he looks great. No tubes or obvious wires in his face. He is recognizable as the handsome man we love…yes! We are so grateful. It looks like we will have a few days of quiet recovery, allowing Vernon’s body and brain to continue it’s healing process. The next big event will be surgery on Wednesday, June 4, to repair the broken pelvic bones. When there are specifics of that surgery we will post them here. Meanwhile, please continue praying for steady progress toward complete healing. Allison and the kids are doing well with lots of loving support…definitely a silver lining to this scenario.

We are so grateful for this website created just for Vernon. If you want to leave a comment, be sure to click on the title of the blog and you will find the place to respond.

The next surgery

Today, Friday, has been one of rest and recovery between surgeries for our sleeping Vernon. We’ve had a break and now we want to regroup and focus prayer on the surgery and procedures planned for Saturday. According to our personal hospital interface, Chris Adams, there is a four-hour block of time in the operating room scheduled for tomorrow morning beginning at 7 am. During that time the oral surgeon will be repairing Vernon’s jaw. As part of this effort he will also perform a tracheotomy to install a breathing tube, and a feeding tube will be inserted into Vernon’s side that will send food directly to his stomach.

We are seeing steady progress toward recovery but I believe that progress, not to say Vernon’s very life, is the result of focused, concerted and compassionate prayer by friends and even strangers. We believe God will fill in where science and medicine can’t help. Thank you for being part of Vernon’s story, for carrying him while he is sleeping.

Surgery rescheduled

Vernon will have tomorrow to rest before the surgeons begin the substantial repair work on his jaw. Instead of Friday, this is now scheduled for Saturday. Tomorrow we will post the time and other details as we learn them. For those of you who are prayerfully supporting Vernon, we are truly thankful.

Wednesday afternoon, May 28

Chris Adams has become the best friend and go-to person of all of us who need news of Vernon’s condition. Chris is a knowledge-hungry guy who asks questions of the doctors, technicians, police…anyone involved with Vernon’s situation. He figures out what’s going on and relays it to us in understandable chunks.

The good news is that Vernon is progressing well. There is less swelling of the brain than they thought and, while it is still draining, even that is within the expected range at this point in the recovery.

Doctors have scheduled surgery on Vernon’s broken arm for tomorrow, Thursday, at 7:00 a.m. That depends, of course, on how Vernon is doing. Even though he is deeply sedated, moving him to the operating room will cause some stress. If there is any question about Vernon’s ability to tolerate the move and operation, it will be postponed until Friday. They have also scheduled surgery on his jaw for this Friday.

Pray they can safely do the arm surgery on Thursday and not potentially have two operations on Friday…but only if it is truly safe. Pray that each necessary procedure will be done in the right time and way.

We are so thankful for your concern and your prayers on Vernon’s behalf. And we thank God for Vernon’s steady progress in the right direction.
