Practicing Gratitude

Tonight’s update brought to you by our dear friend Jeff Girard. This is the email he sent me earlier today.

Hi Alli:

I’ve been talking art with Vernon for the past several Fridays, because it seems to be broad and internal enough for him to be able to track. School and soccer are good too. Each time we talk about art, I have asked him if he thought he could draw something for me. His reply is usually “Sure, but not today.”

Last Friday however, he agreed, and so I handed him the drawing pad and gave him a choice of markers. He chose red, and it took some doing, but I got his hand holding the marker, and lined it up on the pad. The result was pretty scribbly, but mid-drawing he choose to switch to green, so there was something going on there.

After a couple of minutes he seemed tired of the effort. so he stopped and sat back. I thought we were done, but after a rest he said he wanted to try again. He said he’d draw his roommate Joe. I offered the marker to him, and he took it with his right hand, flicked the cap off on to the floor, transferred it to his left hand a squared up on the pad.
This is Joe, and I’d say it’s a reasonable likeness all things considered.

He asked me to be sure to show it to Joe, but I couldn’t find him as I was leaving, so I’ll make sure to let him see it next time.
A glimpse, if ever so oblique, to the mind that’s there in Vernon.
