I’m sure that often the Occupational Therapist’s important job gets overshadowed, as she has to aid so much in the big muscle work of the PT. But Vernon had her to himself for a bit yesterday, so I recorded a few videos. My iPhone ran out of space before I could get more, but part of the reason I’m sharing these is so that the people who have signed up to visit/help Vernon might have an idea of how easy it will be to give him gentle ‘therapy’ on his right arm and leg. We will be providing simple range-of-motion diagrams as well: the same ones I was left with in the hospital. Its more likely to get it right than get it wrong. At this point, I’m focusing on quantity over quality. Massage is great too. Anything helps!
And most of all, he will know he isn’t alone. Touch is more healing than we understand.
Here is a basic rotation of the arm and shoulder…
The hand and fingers…
And simple work with a washcloth (or flannel, as Vernon would say.)

Great to see Vernon up and working. Good idea to put these films up. It isnt necessary to move as fast as this experienced therapist does. Vernon seems quite flexible and not so spastic in his right arm. Good to teach him to work with his fingers himself like he does with the washcloth, bending the thum out. He will be less aware of his right side, and has to learn to “notice it”. That will help when he starts walking. Take a big breath with him to relax, give him time to let the brain respond. Way to go! Lots of love
Good point, Synnove. Thanks for that input, it’s helpful.
How wonderful to see what’s going on! Thanking the Lord for all His great answers to our prayers. Allison, I’m in Newport Beach right now, but my flexibility for going on my own is a bit limited. We borrow our granddaughter’s car when it is available, and never sure when that will be. I’d love to see Vernon and encourage you in person, but not sure if that will happen. I will get a phone number from your mom and dad if I can see a window of getting over there….I will call you before just popping in.
Hi Mabel. I forgot to write you back the last time you mentioned your trip. Well, I’ll be there in the morning tomorrow. Maybe see you then. Don’t know what the circus will be like…ha ha! But a hug is always good! 🙂
Allison,
It is so good to see Vernon up and doing PT and I know it will help him and you. Thanks for keeping us informed about Vern’s condition. It has been a long time but God is still in control.
Love,
Becky
