Now we are getting somewhere.
I finally was able to see the physical and occupational therapists at work with Vernon today. They worked for about 20 minutes, as they have been doing every day this week. So far, Jaime and Veronica are working as a team, helping each other with his weight, as he can’t hold himself up alone yet. And of course they are both getting to know him and his abilities/limitations. Eventually as Vernon gets stronger, they will be able to work on him in separate sessions.
I was so proud to see him sitting up. Yes, he was aided, but he was able to follow instructions where possible. He can open his eyes, track movement (to a degree), and move his head around a little. I have never seen him nod yes and shake no as clearly and as often as I did today—especially at the questioning of others.
So at 14 weeks in, I present you with a SITTING VERNON!
BRAVO TO OUR HERO!

Hi Kirsten. Yes, he did great! He was obviously in a lot of pain in some of the stretches and got tired very early on. I remembered this as I stretched out with my pilates later in the day: must. stay. ahead. of. vernon. 🙂
Another milestone to remember and celebrate! Vernon and Allison, you have a great cloud of witnesses who are cheering you on. Grateful!!!

These last two updates have really shown how much has moved on so quickly. Just brilliant.
Allison, the previous post with Vernon smiling with you cuddled up with him and this one are so deeply touching. I feel your joy! His strength, and yours, are so evident and inspiring. Loving you, beautiful Lady and your handsome man. ❤️
Woohoo! And I can see that Maki is enthusiastically cheering him on from behind (at least his picture is).
Go, Vernon!!! Your patience and his determination are amazing!
Love the first sentence of this post, too. Still love that Crowded House song, Now We’re Getting Somewhere. I always thought Vernon looked a little like Neil Finn. 😉
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME! Thank you, Lord, for Your mercies that are new every morning! Great is Thy faithfulness!
LOVE!!!!!
Inch by inch, anything’s a cinch. A dr Schuller quote from 1972! I’ve been praying for Vernon. He’s on my emergency prayer list. It’s exciting to see what god has done with his progress. I worked with your dad at WBT in Huntington Beach. Keep looking up!
We are so happy to see how Vernon is progressing….slow but sure wins the race! We have so much hope for this man to have a full recovery even if it takes longer than we thought…God is so faithful no matter what the circumstances!

I have been reading every post since day one…have laughed, cried, been in awe, been on my knees in prayer, and now am jumping for joy!! Vernon will get through this, and so will you Alison. Your courage, strength, humor and more than anything -faith, will scale this mountain.
PS…Hunter is looking forward to seeing Maki back at school!
I am thrilled to see Vernon sitting up. I pray his each day for Vernon and his continued progress. Continuing to think of Vernon and his family and continue to pray.

I’m a friend of Sue Donaldson, and found your site through her website.
Not only is (physical, occupational, and speech) therapy good for your husband, it can be a means of encouragement for you, especially when you are able to see the successes. And you can use the time to be an encourager (dare I say cheerleader?) for your husband – and therapist.
While my Mom received physical and occupational therapy, I tried to be there as often as possible. Many times I was late to work, but it made my day when we – the therapist included – saw improvements, and I was able to encourage (cheerlead?) my Mom through the sometimes hard “work” (sessions). This time will also allow you to view the working relationship between the therapist and your husband. If the therapist is having a difficult time getting your husband to complete a task, you may be able to suggest trying it a different way.
Also, while it’s the therapist’s job to complete goals, you being there as an encourager (remember, cheerleader) for your husband may (will) allow the therapist to change from viewing him as another patient to a reminder that he is someone’s husband and father.
Wishing you and your family much success (and encouragement) through, and in spite of, the difficulties.
Thank you for that insight, Rob. Means a lot.
Marc just said, what Allison doesn’t realise is that she a hero too. You both are. Much love to you all xxx
